& more, but
they didn’t allow me bags

: the space was too small
that ship could sink
that plane could break
with the weight a life has.

i brought
the color of my skin
my curly hair
my mother tongue
my favorite foods
in memory of my tongue
for this country
i brought
my orixas
about my head
all of my genealogical tree
ancestors, the roots
for this country
i brought all of these things
& more
: no one noticed
but my suitcase weighs so much.

: o espaço era pequeno demais
aquele navio poderia afundar
aquele avião poderia partir-se
com o peso que tem uma vida.

a cor da minha pele
meu cabelo crespo
meu idioma materno
minhas comidas preferidas
na memória da minha língua

meus orixás
sobre a minha cabeça
toda minha árvore genealógica
antepassados, as raízes

& mais
: ninguém notou,
mas minha mala pesa tanto.

Lubi Prates is a poet, translator, editor and curator. She has four published books: coração na boca (2012), triz (2016), um corpo negro (2018) sin país, (2018). um corpo negro was published with an award, PROAC, and is in the process of being published in Argentina, Colombia, the United States and Spain, in addition to being a finalist for the Jabuti Award and Rio Literature Award. Prates has several publications in anthologies and national and international magazines. She is a founding partner and editor of nosotros, and editor of the literary magazine, Parêntese. She is dedicated to actions that combat the invisibility of women and blacks. She is currently a doctoral student in Human Development Psychology at the University of São Paulo.
